My my main concerns in packing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanpoupard.com\/edinburgh-to-hong-kong\/train-route\/\">my journey from Edinburgh to Hong Kong by train<\/a> are that I can carry my bags myself easily, and that I have enough layers to keep warm in the Russian winter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m used to travelling without too much luggage, and I&#8217;ve tried to pack light &#8211; I&#8217;m taking two bags on my journey &#8211; one larger (44 litre) rucksack, and one smaller daypack (20 litre).  I&#8217;m aiming to do some laundry when I can so I don&#8217;t have to pack too many clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matthew Woodward has a really useful guide on his blog on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"what to bring and what to leave behind on your Trans-Siberian adventure (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/realrussia.co.uk\/Trains\/Trans-Siberian-travel-guide\/Trans-Siberian-Guide\/Trans-Siberian-What-To-Pack\" target=\"_blank\">what to bring and what to leave behind on your Trans-Siberian adventure<\/a>.  I&#8217;ve used this as a starting point, with some additional bits and pieces that I thought would come in useful. But outside the train it&#8217;s a different matter: the average low temperature in December in Yekaterinburg is -14\u00b0C, and a chilly -19\u00b0C in Irkutsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Hong Kong, my final destination, the average high\/low temperature in December is 20<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C\/15\u00b0C, that&#8217;s a huge 39\u00b0C warmer than Irkutsk.  How to pack for that kind of temperature difference?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer? North Face &#8216;thermoball&#8217; claims it&#8217;s as warm as down but packs smaller<\/li><li>Polar thermal neckwarmer (Buff)<\/li><li>Warm baselayer leggings and top(s)<\/li><li>Thermal socks (Smartwool)<\/li><li>A pair of touchscreen gloves, to wear under sub-zero mittens<\/li><li>A thick fleece-lined knitted hat<\/li><li>Snow boots (rated to -32\u00b0C)<\/li><li>Hand warmers <\/li><li>Ski trousers (not pictured)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I get very cold hands and feet as I suffer from Reynaud&#8217;s so hopefully two pairs of gloves will be enough!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical items to take for the Trans-Siberian train journey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some practical items to help make life a bit easier on the train:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mug for tea\/soup\/noodles\/porridge<\/li><li>Metal water bottle &#8211; for cooling down hot water from the samovar<\/li><li>Washing-up liquid<\/li><li>Battery pack, chargers and adapters<\/li><li>My bamboo cutlery set<\/li><li>Toilet roll<\/li><li>Hand sanitiser<\/li><li>Mini microfibre travel towel &#8211; it&#8217;s not.  I&#8217;ll be travelling first class but toilets are shared, and on most of the trains sinks are shared too.  Of all the trains I&#8217;m taking only one has shower facilities (and that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"can't be relied on (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/realrussia.co.uk\/Trains\/Trans-Siberian-travel-guide\/Trans-Siberian-Guide\/Trans-Mongolian-Train-003-004\" target=\"_blank\">can&#8217;t be relied on<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;the supply of water can be very limited and in winter plumbing problems often cause minor floods&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In &#8216;normal&#8217; life I try to avoid creating unnecessary waste &#8211; toiletries and wet wipes are some of the biggest sources of plastic waste, so before travelling I spent a ridiculously long time searching for &#8216;biodegradable&#8217; (not plastic) wet wipes. (And also negotiating the kiosk shops in the stations &#8211; described as like &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderlust.co.uk\/content\/why-you-should-never-wash-your-hands-on-the-trans-siberian-express\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"an outside version of Argos, but without the catalogue (opens in a new tab)\">an outside version of Argos, but without the catalogue<\/a>&#8220;).
